Really 18 months since any progress?!

OK, so I get distracted and WHAM! a year and a half fly by. I keep meaning to get back to work on the sketchbook project, which as i recall was at the half-way stage. On the plus side, I haven’t been idle. In that time I’ve got at least 1 full-length animation under my belt. Really would like to get back to doing some illustration, and some abstract art. At the moment, I’m also “between day jobs” so I should, theoretically, have more time than ever to devote to this. Ho-hum. Hope you all enjoy The Feast of Steven in the meantime.

The Doctor as Holmes. What a twist of genius. I wanted the sketch to look like a postmodern take on the cover of some penny dreadful. Reproduction poster here (430 kb) if you want to recreate your own Palace Theatre. I’ll leave it to you to supply your own grizzly murders!

The Masque of Mandragora

This is such a visually rich story, I could have devoted an entire sketchbook to it. I love Portmeirion, the location for this story & The Prisoner, I’d love to do more art that examines the setting one day. For this sketch,though, I decied to work on this one scene, using a quick pastel sketch I did last time I visited as a reference. I’ve tried to imbue it with the sense of joy of being there. It’s sort of the sense of excitement you used to get as a child hearing the bells of an ice-cream van. A lovely sensation. I strongly recomend a visit to Portmeirion. Old, wrinkled faces are a bit of a cliche of portraiture. I tend to try and avoid such cliches, but Sylvia Coleridge as Amelia Ducat… she’s just so fun, isn’t she? So you’ll excuse this momentary self-indulgence! I’ve also thrown in a Krynoid, and tried to make it feel like the Krynoid is a study by Amelia.

It’s Gaudi-inspired sets, it’s gorgeous costumes, it’s dancing women, it’s mad, insane performances, it’s body-horror, Morbius is an artistic gift-horse. If you have the DVD check out Barry Newbury’s design sketches in the gallery. I would be a fool to even try and emulate them.

I love this story, it’s so unashamedly old-fashioned & nostalgic in it’s presentation of an action-adventure. So yet again I went for that old comic style inspired by annuals, all line art & blocks of colour.
