Introduction

In 2009, Doctor Who takes a short break from our screens. During this time, a group of fans at doctorwhoforum.com and facebook are, together, holding a marathon – the complete 45-year history of the show. It’s a massive undertaking, and I’ll be one of them.

This is a tribute to the TV show, and it’s a great one, but it’s more than that. It’s a celebration of the effects of that show: bringing together people from all walks of life, across the world, in friendship – and sometimes heated debate – on various forums.

So, a note on what this is. It’s a Visual Diary. Any current or former Art students here will probably be familliar with the idea – that an artist records events or expriences. Well that’s what I’m going to try to do. Whilst watching each story I’m aiming to produce a sketch, taking no more than half an hour. It’s not illustration – by instinct and training, I’m an abstract artist. Hopefully what is presented here will be illustrative, though. It’s a reaction… my reaction, summing up the flavour and thoughts and feelings of each Dr Who story, along with all the posters on doctorwhoforum.com (”DWF”). Seeing things in a new light, exploring those wonderful visuals of a TV show, celebrating the love of people united online, by a single common factor. It’s magic. The effect of a very special TV show…
